Abstract Marine aquaculture holds great promise for meeting increasing demand healthy protein that is sustainably produced, but reaching necessary production levels will be challenging. The ecosystem approach to a framework sustainable development prioritizes multiple-stakeholder participation and spatial planning. These types of approaches have been increasingly used help guide sustainable, persistent, equitable planning, most countries difficulties in setting or longer-term goals. Scenario analysis (SA) future planning uses similar can complement holistic methods, such as the framework, by providing temporal analogue spatially robust design. Here we define SA aquaculture, outline how benefit review this tool already being used. We track use tools 20 International Council Exploration Sea member nations, with particular attention given Norway’s goals 2050. conclude employing combination an scenario analyses may identify scale over time, aid evaluating feasibility desired outcomes, highlight potential social-ecological conflicts trade-offs otherwise overlooked.
